Cascade Symphony awards scholarships
The Cascade Symphony presented four scholarships to young musicians at the final concert of their 2008-09 season. Each year, the symphony awards scholarships to graduating seniors from local school districts.
This year’s winners of the Cascade Symphony Scholarship are Erika Burns, Sung Eun Kang and Kathleen Shin.
Burns is a senior at Bothell High School and has played the violin for 14 years. She is currently the concertmaster of the Everett Youth Symphony and has performed as a soloist with Everett Symphony.
She plans to attend Western Washington University next year.
Kang is a senior at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo. She has played flute for 10 years and has played for three years with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. She plans to attend Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa., next year.
Shin is also a senior at Kamiak High School and plays the flute.
She has played with the Everett Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and plans on attending Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle next year.
This year marks the first award of the Mori Simon Scholarship, which is awarded to a student who exhibits exceptional talent and skill. The late Mori Simon was a musical icon in the Seattle area for more than 40 years.
The winner of this award is Rachel Wong, a senior at Lynnwood High School who has played the violin for 11 years.
She has performed as a soloist with Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra and Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra, and has served as concertmaster of the Academy Chamber Orchestra and Everett Youth Symphony Orchestra.
A winner of the Seattle Young Artist Music Festival Concerto Competition, she plans to attend the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin.
Edmonds student named to Ithaca College dean’s list
Andrew Greene, son of Steven Greene and Victoria Adams of Edmonds, has been named to the dean’s list at Ithaca College’s School of Health Sciences and Human Performance in New York.
Greene earned a GPA of 3.5 for the spring term.
To qualify for this academic honor, students must attain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and complete a minimum of 15 credit hours, of which at least 12 are graded.
Mill Creek woman on university dean’s list
Ashley Allen of Mill Creek has been named to the spring semester dean’s list at the School of Management at State University of New York at Binghamton.
The criteria for the dean’s list is a minimum grade point average of 3.75.
Snohomish County students graduate from Seattle Pacific
