The three stars of camp, as selected by the media in attendance (me)

Third star: Radko Gudas, BLUE. With Taylor Ellington and Graham Potuer graduating, Everett needs players who can step into the top defensive pairing. In the Czech import Gudas it looks like the Tips found one. He’s got decent size, his skating’s fine, he hits and he has a good shot. Looked like the total package to me.

Second star: Manraj Hayer, RED. He was impressive at last year’s camp as a 15-year-old invitee, but I never thought he’d be this good this fast. He proved too good for the No. 2 unit and was moved up to play with the top units, and he still produced. Skilled, smart and plays hard, that’s a great combination.

First star: Byron Froese, GREEN. He really was a cut above this camp. He scored goals, set up others, and camped himself in front of the net when he didn’t have the puck. And when his team didn’t have the puck he went and got it. Terrific all-around camp from a player who’s improved in leaps and bounds over the past calendar year.

Others worthy of mention: Paul Van de Velde, Josh Winquist, Ryan Murray, Mitchell Loose, Thomas Heemskerk. And special consideration for the 15-year-olds who lasted the entire camp with the second units (Nicholas Walters, Jari Erricson, Darian Henry, Dale Nerland). It’s hard to hold up and show well in your first camp when you’re thrown in against older players on a full-time basis.

Dale Hunt is a question mark because he got one of his front teeth knocked back and is going to need that fixed. I suspect they have someone in reserve to fill in should Hunt be unable to play.
