BOYS TENNIS ROUNDUP: 2 doubles wins boost Snohomish

EVERETT — Following a split in singles matches, Snohomish pulled out two doubles victories en route to a 4-3 win in a season-opening Wesco North boys tennis match Tuesday afternoon at Cascade.

Cascade (0-1), last season’s runner-up to Snohomish, won the first two singles matches behind the solid play of No. 1 Johnny Mills and No. 2 Garrett Johnson.

Mills won his match 6-1, 6-1, over Snohomish’s Chase Anderson.

“He played smart,” Cascade head coach Ashley Layton said. “He executed shots he needed to and he came out with the win.”

The Panthers’ (1-0) Mitch Scott and Dominic Schrock evened the score at 2-2 with singles wins.

“(Scott) was consistent and didn’t make many errors,” Layton said.

The contest came down to doubles matches and Cascade jumped out to the lead with a win in the No. 1 match.

Cascade’s No. 1 doubles team of Richard Nguyen and Eddie Bayya won 7-5 in a tiebreaker to give the Bruins the 3-2 lead.

“It was the first time they played a match together,” Layton said. “Their teamwork pulled it through.

“It was close, the tiebreak score was 7-5 and they went back and forth quite a few times.”

But Snohomish pulled out 6-4, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-4 wins in the next two doubles matches.
