50 YEARS AGO (1959)

A large attendance was expected Tuesday evening at Knights of Columbus Hall, 2914½ Rucker Ave., when Jessie R. Butler would open her fall and winter series of contract bridge tournaments. Open to all interested contract players, the tournaments would be each Tuesday evening.

Fall actvities of Stillaguamish Grange Auxiliary were beginning next week with a meeting in the home of Marie Stangeland. Making cancer pads for Snohomish County Visiting Nurses Association would occupy the day.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

Lee E. Larsen Jr. of 2310 Eighth St., edged out seven other qualifiers to win the $100 weekly prize in the first Herald Football Forecaster Contest. He came within four points of the Miami vs. Michigan tie-breaker game. Right behind him was Rich Hansen of Arlington, who was only five points off.

Irene Mirabella was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Granite Falls town council. She was chosen by a 3-1 vote of the four remaining council members from among five people who volunteered for the job. Mirabella replaced Ray McClusky, who resigned when he moved out of town.
