$20 wine tries to save Collins Building in Everett

Historic Everett wants people who support Big Red to drink some Big Red.

The nonprofit group is selling bottles of a Cab-Merlot blend called “Big Red” to help raise money to save Big Red, the nickname preservationists have coined for the historic Collins Casket Factory that sits at the Everett waterfront.

“Let’s raise a toast with Big Red while we figure out ways not to raze Big Red,” said Valerie Steel, Historic Everett president .

The Port of Everett owns the 75-year-old Collins Building and has sought its destruction, saying it would be too costly to renovate. Historic Everett maintains the building is a slice of history worth safeguarding for future use.

Steel and other activists have persuaded a judge to issue an injunction that has temporarily stopped the port from dismantling the building.

The goal of selling bottles of Big Red is to help Historic Everett defray the costs of attorneys fees as the group continues the Collins challenge in court. The group hopes to raise about $3,000.

The custom-label Big Red wine is bottled by Silver Lake Winery. The bottles go for $20 each. Orders can be e-mailed to info@HistoricEverett.org or go to [URL]www.historiceverett.org;http://www.historiceverett.org.
