No Tips games this weekend? Keep an eye on this instead

It’s the rare full weekend off for the Tips, so it’s understandable if you’re going through some withdrawal. So what to do in the meantime? Well, next week is Portland week for Everett as the Tips play host to the Winterhawks on Wednesday, then again on Sunday. So it would be a good time to check in on Portland.

Portland just might be the most intriguing team in the WHL this season. The past three seasons the Winterhawks were a franchise in disarray off the ice, and on the ice they were the league’s bottom feeder. But stability was brought to the franchise early last season in the form of new owner Bill Gallacher and new coach/GM Mike Johnston. Portland was surprisingly dominant during the preseason, and the Winterhawks began the regular season in the same fashion, starting 3-1 and outscoring opponents 19-6.

So with the Winterhawks coming to town twice next week, I’ll be keeping a close watch on their games this weekend. Portland plays at Spokane (and Kyle Beach) tonight, then at Kamloops on Sunday.
