Just how big will Boeing Charleston be?

The size of Boeing’s 787 factory in Charleston, S.C., seems to be in flux, according to this story published today on the Post and Courier’s Web site.
When Boeing picked Charleston over Everett for the site of its second 787 assembly line, the company put the size of the building at 584,000 square feet. But estimates have swelled to as high as 955,320 square feet. That figure, however, includes office space, Marco Cavazzoni, Boeing’s new general manager in Charleston, told the publication.
Boeing’s final assembly bay here in Everett is 385,000 square feet. But the company acknowledged last week that it plans to duplicate in Charleston some of the 787 work done through its fabrication division here in the Puget Sound region.
Meanwhile, here in Everett, all eyes are on the skies – not to see the 787 fly just yet, but on the weather.
Boeing has the Dreamliner’s first flight scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, but that depends on weather conditions. The forecast calls for temps around 40 degrees tomorrow morning, with light rain and winds from the southeast at 10 miles per hour.
