Japan Airlines has filed for bankruptcy protection. The airline is about $25.6 billion in debt.
The carrier’s stock has taken such a beating that JAL is valued at about $150 million, roughly the price of a Boeing 787.
In this story, reporters for Bloomberg spoke with Boeing’s Randy Tinseth about JAL’s bankruptcy.
A couple key points:
- JAL has 71 orders with Boeing, about 21 more requests than previously disclosed. The unfilled orders include 35 787s, 20 737s, 9 767s and 7 777s.
- The airline will sell off some of its older 747s, potentially depressing the resale and rental value of Boeing 747s and 767s.
