OLYMPIA — The state Senate has approved a measure that could allow more college students to get their degrees quicker.

The bill passed today on a 36-11 vote and now heads to the House for further consideration. It allows state and regional universities and colleges to develop accelerated baccalaureate degree programs for qualified students to get their degree in three years without having to attend summer classes or take more than a full class load during the regular academic year.

The schools must submit their plan for approval from the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The measure is Senate Bill 5237.
