Artist trains her lens on China

Photographer Terry Preshaw loves to travel. Last October she went to China for the first time as a member of an Everett Chamber of Commerce tour group where she visited Beijing, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai.

Preshaw, a business immigration lawyer, viewed the trip as an opportunity in terms of business and photography.

She said it was a challenge to find “Old China” because China marches to a modern drumbeat with half of its 1.3 billion population below the age of 25. Her images take the form of photo illustrations, each image creating its own vignette.

“I am not interested in photographic realism per se,” Preshaw said. “Instead, I shoot for composition and then draw out the magic by focusing on detail and color — almost a hyper-realism that creates a painterly feeling when viewed.”

“Travels With Terry: China” is a new photography exhibit on view through April at Enchanted Florist &Confections, 2809 Colby Ave., Everett.

Small is beautiful: This March, Gallery North is presenting its first “Miniature Show and Competition.”

The competition features the paintings of numerous Pacific Northwest artists. The works will be in two size categories: miniature and small paintings. They will include oil, pastel, watercolor, colored pencil and acrylic mediums exploring a variety of themes.

“The Miniature Show” opens Monday and includes a catered reception to meet the artists from 1 to 4 p.m. March 7 at Gallery North, 508 Main St., Edmonds. The show is on view through March 28.

“At the Water’s Edge” is a new exhibit by artist Cecelia Venolia, who combines her love for the sea with her love of acrylic painting.

Venolia started out in the art field by developing a business painting and doing custom artwork in designer showcases, model homes, residential homes and other commercial structures.

Then she refined her use of watercolor and colored pencil drawing before moving to Washington, where she became a member of the Arts of Snohomish Galley in 2006.

She has since exhibited her paintings in juried art shows, group and solo shows.

“At the Water’s Edge” is on view through March at Meyer’s Cafe at the Everett Village Marina, 1700 W. Marine View Drive, Everett.
