Donkeys are stars at hoops game

Published 8:51 pm Monday, March 29, 2010

A Donkey Basketball Game is planned April 7 at Snohomish High School.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at 1316 Fifth St. Teachers from Snohomish elementary, middle and high schools will participate. Some high school seniors will also play.

They will ride donkeys while playing basketball. The animals are provided by a company in Entiat in central Washington.

Students may buy tickets at school conferences. Tickets at the door cost $5 to $9.

For more information, call Linda Savage at 425-308-1775 or e-mail pacsassoc@yahoo.com.

The event benefits the SHS Senior Safe Grad Night 2010.

As entertaining as donkey basketball can be, there is one feature of the evening that could prove to offer the most laughs.

The incoming Snohomish High School student body officers are the Pooper Scooper Crew.

News behind the news: Last week, Woodland Park Zoo euthanized a 47-year-old female hippo, Gertie, due to age-related osteoarthritis.

Gertie, who weighed about 5,000 pounds, lived at the zoo since 1966. She was the oldest animal at the zoo and is believed to have lived at the zoo longer than any animal in its 110-year history. Two female hippos remain at the zoo’s African Savanna, 31-year-old Water Lily and 10-year-old Guadalupe.

But what happened to Gertie, you know, afterward?

Zoo spokeswoman Rebecca Whitham said Gertie was transported to a pet crematorium.

“We are opting not to disclose where her ashes will go,” Whitham says. “Her skeletal remains will go to the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, where she’ll become part of their collection for research and education purposes.”

Neil Edwards, spokesman for Emeritus of Seabrook senior living community, says residents put together 150 Easter baskets for a food bank.

Goodies were donated by seniors, their families and staff.

Activity Director Mary Hanke says getting involved in a community service project helps residents in Everett stay in touch with their community, and have purpose in their lives.

We like a name that fits an event.
