Students donate health kits to Haiti

Students from Our Saviors Lutheran Church preschool in Everett were recently asked to donate items to help people in Haiti. Students donated hand towels, soap, toothbrushes and various other items to The Hearts For Haiti Campaign.

Three students earn scholarships to EWU

Three Snohomish County residents were recently awarded scholarships to Eastern Washington University for the 2010-11 academic year.

Brandt Blankinship of Everett, and Mitchel Gogert of Arlington, were each awarded a Presidential Scholarship for $2,500, and Jordan Moses of Sultan was awarded a Presidential Scholarship for $2,000.

This scholarship is awarded to high school students with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.8 or higher or a SAT score of 1250 or higher.

Brandt is the son of Daniel and Lynda Blankinship of Everett. He will graduate from Everett High School this year where he played varsity football and was on the varsity track team.

Mitchel is the son of Tom and Sandra Gogert of Arlington. He will graduate from Lakewood High School this year where he ran cross country all four years of high school and was a member of honor society.

Jordan is the son of Glen and Heather Moses of Sultan. He will graduate from Monroe High School this year where he was a member of DECA and an ASB representative.

Arlington bands give spring concert

Arlington High School Bands, directed by John Grabowski, performed their last concert of the season on April 8 at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center in Arlington.

The traditional Senior Recognition Night portion of the spring concert brought 37 graduating seniors to the stage to receive flowers from Grabowski and audience applause.

Edmonds resident earns nursing degree

Scottie Sindora of Edmonds recently earned an associate degree in science in nursing from Excelsior College.

Excelsior College is an accredited, private, nonprofit institution in Albany, N.Y. that focuses on the needs of working adults.

Rotary honors AIM High School students

The Rotary Club of Snohomish honored two AIM High School students of the quarter on April 15 during their regular Thursday morning breakfast.

Certificates were presented to Amanda Blue and Jeania Morgan by the Rotary club president, Brian Berard and AIM High School teachers, Thom Engel and Caryl Conley-Knapp.

Student qualifies for FBLA competition

Granite Falls High School senior Kati Reverman recently qualified for the national Future Business Leaders of America competition that will be in July in Nashville, Tenn. She qualified by taking second place at the state competition held April 10 in Yakima.

Kati competed in the Accounting I category. The competition is a one-hour timed test, and the top two scores move forward to the national competition.

At the national event she will attend competition events and leadership activities and learn new ideas about shaping career goals through workshops and exhibits.

She plans to attend Everett Community College and hopes to major in accounting and biology. Also representing Granite Falls High School at the state conference were Jacob Brown, Miranda Meier and Ciera Scown.

High school jazz choir takes first in festival

The Lakewood High School Jazz Choir went to the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival in Oregon on April 17 and took first place in its division.

The choir is composed of 20 students from Lakewood High School in Smokey Point. They competed against eight other schools to win its division.

The choir performed three songs each in preliminary and final rounds. The crowd favorite was an arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” arranged by Lakewood High School Band and Choir director Katy Trapp just for the Lakewood Jazz Choir.

Mill Creek student cited in competition

Jared Snyder of Mill Creek recently received an honorable mention in the 41st annual national Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Competition.

The Foundation was chartered in 1964, as a nonprofit to promote a greater appreciation of the significance, courage and patriotism of George Washington and his leadership throughout the American Revolution. The Foundation’s headquarters is in Bristol, Pa.
