Art in the Barn this weekend in Oso

Published 8:02 pm Wednesday, June 23, 2010

The name remains though the barn is gone.

The annual art festival Art in the Barn continues this year at the picturesque Yantis family farm in Oso. And though the barn became a casualty of heavy snow and fell down in the winter of 2008, the art show continues in the spot where the barn once stood.

About 30 members of the Arlington Arts Council and friends will show — and sell — paintings, photography, sculpture and pottery.

This is the sixth year for Art in the Barn, which was founded inside the Yantis hay barn. After the barn fell down, Monica Yantis, an artist and former secretary of the Arlington Arts Council, the sponsoring organization, said the classic line, “The show must go on.” And so it has.

“Art in the Barn” runs from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, at 20412 Highway 530 NE, Oso. For information, call 360-435-3778 or go to www.arlingtonartscouncil.net.

Stone and glass: The Matzke Fine Art Gallery &Sculpture Park is melding the art of stone and glass in an exhibit that presents sculptures from the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association and pieces made by the Pilchuck Glass School staff and alumni.

Pilchuck Glass School, an international community of artists in Stanwood, has become one of the largest educational centers in the world for artists working in glass, according to press material about the show.

The show opens at 11 a.m. Saturday with a public reception planned for 5 p.m. at Matzke Fine Art Gallery, 2345 Blanche Way, Camano Island. The show is up through Aug. 29.

Howdy partner: The seventh annual Spirit of the Northwest Art Show will present the newest works of eight Whidbey Island artists.

Many of these artists will also demonstrate their skills during the show. And this year, the show has added the element of silent auctions where numerous art pieces will be donated by this year’s artists for auction.

The show features award-winning artists such as Gerry Roberts, the 2010 Coupeville Arts Festival poster artist, and Randy Emmons, who was the Coupeville Festival poster artist for 2009. Other artists include a carver, a sculpture and four painters.

The Spirit of the Northwest Art Show will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Coupeville Recreation Hall, 901 NW Alexander St., Coupeville.
