Come to Celebrate Shoreline

Published 10:40 pm Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The Celebrate Shoreline Parade “A Caring Community” will begin at noon Aug. 15 along 15th Avenue Northeast. The start time is one hour later than past years.

Parade emcee Jerry Toner will sit with judges in the parking lot of the Safeway store at Northeast 175th Street and 15th Avenue Northeast to share his colorful commentary about each group.

The parade sponsor this year is Shoreline Community College and the Grand Marshal is Boni Biery. Biery was selected for her commitment to environmental health in Shoreline parks. Other parade participants include the Northwest Junior Pipe Band, Fort Lewis I Corps Color Guard, Keystone Kops, Shoreline Rotary Clubs and numerous drill teams, colorful floats, community groups and classic vehicles. All entrants will be judged and prizes awarded in seven categories at the festival at Ridgecrest Elementary School.

The first Celebrate Shoreline parade took place on Aurora Avenue North in August 1997, celebrating the city’s inauguration. The parade continued each year on Aurora until 2002 when the parade was moved to North City along 15th Avenue Northeast along with the festival at Ridgecrest Elementary School.

PAWS offers adoption discount

From now through Aug. 31, PAWS is slashing the adoption fee for all cats, six months and older, to $30 — a third of the normal fee — in the hopes of relieving an overload of cats at its shelters in Lynnwood and Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood.

“Summer always means more cats and kittens, but this year we have already taken in 22 percent more young kittens than the same time last year,” said Kay Joubert, PAWS director of companion animal services. “More kittens means the older cats get overlooked and wait a lot longer to be adopted. We’ve reached a point where there is no more space in the adoption room.”

The economy has also driven up the number of people asking PAWS to take in cats they can no longer afford to keep. PAWS is trying to accommodate those requests as much as possible, but space is limited and the organization needs to reserve space for stray animals who need a safe place to wait for their families to find them.

Cats adopted from PAWS are spayed or neutered, microchipped, have had their first set of vaccines and come with a cat carrier. For hours, directions and more information about adopting, visit www.paws.org
