Dogs, cats featured at Pet Fair

Purrfect Pals, a no-kill cat shelter and sanctuary, and Old Dog Haven are partnering with Olsen’s Food Emporium and Mukilteo Pet Pros for a first annual Pet Fair from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. The event will take place at the shopping complex on Highway 99 and Mukilteo Speedway in Lynnwood.

Events include cat and kitten adoptions, senior dog adoptions, a special wine tasting from noon to 5 p.m. and microchipping of pets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ($30 per pet for Avid chip). There will be free pet food samples, opportunities to fill the wish list of these two shelters, a free raffle of dog and cat items and a barbecue to benefit both charities.

Senior events

Ÿ Those 55 years of age or older wanting to brush up on defensive driving skills can attend the AAA Driver Improvement Program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Sons of Norway-Normanna Hall in Everett. The course gives practical guidance for traffic accident prevention and enhances driver safety and confidence. Successful course completion qualifies senior drivers for automobile insurance premium discounts.

Ÿ Older adults and their families can learn how seniors can stay active and independent at Rise Up Against Falling, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the South County Senior Center.

The event will provide information on how seniors can prevent falls. A local fire department representative will speak about falls, which are a leading cause for 911 calls from older adults in Snohomish County. Other presentations will focus on exercise, vision, medication management and home safety.

Teens can apply for Japan trip

Youth For Understanding USA announces a new short-term scholarship opportunity for high school students to study in Japan: the Winter Japan-America Friendship Scholars Program.

The three-week Winter JAFS Program will run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 16. Students will have an orientation prior to departure and will then live with a host family. Immersed in Japanese society, YFU students will quickly learn both language and culture. Students will attend a local Japanese school for one week and will also have the opportunity to participate in excursions to museums and cultural events, including the Japanese New Year celebration.

Learn how to start a distillery

The Northwest Agriculture Business Center will host a one-day Artisan Distilling Workshop Sept. 26 for producers interested in establishing a distillery in the state of Washington. The day will focus on start-up and operating costs, federal and state licensing and regulations, and bonds and insurance policies, as well as the marketing of fine craft spirits. The class will be held in Mount Vernon.

A group of industry experts will discuss the finer details of starting an artisan distillery. Berle W. “Rusty” Figgins Jr. of The Ellensburg Distillery will be joined by Richard Gahagan, a retired Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) senior inspector, to provide a firsthand perspective on the economics and logistics of getting a craft distillery licensed and up and running. The Washington State Liquor Control Board will also be on hand to provide information about the new craft distilling law and its regulations.

Call for volunteers

Ÿ Monday evening training sessions for volunteers with the Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County will begin Sept. 28 and run through Oct. 17 in Everett. Classes are provided free to those willing to commit 10 hours of volunteer time within a six-month period for Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County.

Citizenship classes at library

Free weekly citizenship classes will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursdays, starting Oct. 8, at the Mountlake Terrace Library.

Whether you are just starting to apply for citizenship, already have an interview date or would just like to know more about the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, these classes will help. Taught by a trained volunteer, the classes will be offered weekly on a drop-in basis. However, those who plan to attend the Oct. 8 class are asked to pre-register.

Rain garden workshop

Learn how to beautify your landscape with a rain garden while at the same time help reduce storm water runoff and improve water quality in our local streams and Puget Sound.

During this two-hour workshop, you will learn all about rain gardens, what they are, how to build your own and the benefits of having one in your own landscape. As part of attending this workshop you will receive a copy of the “Rain Garden Handbook for Western Washington Homeowners,” which will give additional information on constructing a rain garden.

Free travel classes in Edmonds

Rick Steves Europe through the Back Door will offer Travels Through Urban Geology with David B. Williams on Sept. 24. Hear stories about Carrara marble and Italian travertine. The session will be held at the Travel Center Classroom.

Great Britain, from Big Ben to bagpipes, will be presented Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Edmonds Theater. A digital photography session is being offered in the Travel Center Classroom on that date as well.
