Everett gets to 3-0 with 48-18 win over Lynnwood

EVERETT— Everett’s football team hasn’t led at the end of the first quarter this season.

At least they were tied Friday night against Lynnwood at Everett Memorial Stadium after notching their first, first-quarter touchdown of the season.

That hurdle hasn’t kept the Seagulls (2-0 Wesco 3A, 3-0 overall) from achieving the desired results and they cruised to another victory this time, 48-18 against a Lynnwood team still searching for its first triumph of the season.

Everett has owned the second half this year. The only score the defense has surrendered was against its reserves late in the fourth quarter Friday. Coach Will Soren said after the game they aren’t going to fall into the first quarter trap again next week against Oak Harbor.

“We scored first but we weren’t very crisp,” Soren said. “We just have to continue to work on getting ourselves prepared early in the game. First quarter we are a little sloppy. We will fix that this week.”

Everett ran at will between the tackles with both Blake Williams and Justin Nejbauer totaling more than 100 yards, despite not playing in the fourth quarter. On the other side of the ball, the Royals failed to muster a ground attack with just one rush longer than 3 yards before Everett started taking out its starters in the third quarter.

Williams rushed for 157 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns — his first three-score game as a starter. He also added an interception at the end of the first half that almost matched his best game on the freshman team when he scored three times and had two interceptions two years ago.

“I’m excited,” Williams said. “We got off to a rough start, but we focused and we got back into it. We told ourselves every game is a hard game. Like our coach says, It’s not easy to win football games.”

Williams basically put the game away in the second quarter, breaking a 59-yard run down the sideline with a minute to go in the half. It came in response to a surprise from the Royals, who got a big play for their second score of the game that made it look like the underdogs might keep the game close.

Royals quarterback Blake Lord dropped back in his customary shotgun and set up a textbook screen pass to Coleman Bryant, who followed some nifty downfield blocks all the way to an 80-yard touchdown that made the score 27-12.

A personal foul on the TD pass had the Royals onside kicking inside Seagull territory, but Everett recovered, which set up the big play by Williams, who broke free on second-and-5 with less than 30 seconds remaining. His score gave Everett a 34-12 advantage at the half.

Williams added a 4-yard scoring run in the third quarter before coming out of the game.

“I give 95 percent of the credit to my line,” Williams said. “They came out and blocked up field. My receivers too, they left me one on one with the safeties and I just finished it off.”

Everett quarterback Spencer McKinnon was 8-for-12 through the air for 143 yards and a touchdown. He chipped in two scores on the ground, part of his seven rushes for 58 yards in two and a half quarters.

The Seagulls hope their stout defense and explosive offense take them far this season, though they have yet to play a team with a winning record.

“We want to make it to the Tacoma Dome,” Williams said. “I’m not trying to jinx us or anything but we have the talent. We have the hard work. We just have to execute that’s it.”
