PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Kamiak prevails over Edmonds-Woodway in double overtime

Published 8:09 pm Saturday, October 2, 2010

EVERETT — The kicker is always taken for granted until he’s needed most. The Seattle Seahawks learned it last weekend. The Kamiak Knights learned first-hand Friday night.

After blocking Edmonds-Woodway’s extra-point attempt in the second overtime, the Knights ran the ball into the end zone, and got a successful kick from senior Kyle Watts to pull out the 35-34 double overtime victory in the back-and-forth Wesco South game.

Quarterback Jake Sortor ran 12 yards on three plays to get a first down and then one play later finished the job with an 8-yard touchdown run. Watts’s kick made it official, sending the students onto the field to celebrate the Homecoming victory with their team.

The Knights (3-0 league, 3-2 overall) needed a touchdown after Edmonds-Woodway scored on a 23-yard reception on the second play of the second overtime. Reid Sullivan bobbled the catch but was able to bring it in to give the Warriors the temporary lead with his second touchdown catch of the night.

Sortor, who finished with 120 yards rushing on 20 carries and completed eight of 18 passes for 130 yards a touchdown and an interception, put Kamiak up in the first overtime with a 3-yard run, but E-W immediately tied it with a 12-yard reception by 6-foot, 6-inch receiver Josh Jordan.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kamiak struck first with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Sortor to Nate Regan, capping a 55-yard drive that took two plays and 55 seconds.

E-W (0-2, 1-4) fought right back with Andy Willcock completing a 37-yard pass on fourth down and 10 to Jordan that set up a 1-yard Zack Berg (17 carries for 70 yards) touchdown run, tying the score less than a minute before halftime.

In the third quarter Kamiak again drew first blood, with a 3-yard run by Nic Cooper. But again E-W came storming back with a two-play, 59-yard drive that ended in a 57-yard touchdown pass from Willcock to Sullivan.

The Warriors’ defense then held Kamiak to three consecutive three-and-outs and took their first lead of the game when tight end Grant Arnold caught a 4-yard pass from Willcock, putting E-W up 21-14.

Willcock was 11-for-28 passing for 182 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

On a third and long, E-W called a timeout to decide the best play to get a first down and run out the remaining five minutes on the clock. After the break the Warriors came out throwing, but it was caught by the other team.

Anthony Berg picked off Willcock at the E-W 31-yard line to give the Knights another chance to tie the game, which they took for advantage of.

E.J. Brown caught a 13-yard pass on fourth-and-eight to set up a 2-yard run by Mylz Dixon that would tie the score at 21, and force overtime.
