MONROE — A toddler who was seriously injured Thursday in a crash on Highway 522 is expected to recover, officials said Tuesday.
The 2-year-old boy was in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Debbie Willis, a spokeswoman for Monroe police. He was continuing to improve Tuesday.
The crash killed his mother, Estela Carmona Gijon, 20, of Monroe.
Gijon was eastbound on Highway 522 shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday when her 1994 Honda Civic crossed the centerline and struck a westbound pickup truck, officials said. She was just south of the intersection with U.S. 2 in Monroe. The boy was strapped into a car seat in the back of the Honda. He was airlifted to Harborview.
The crash remained under investigation Tuesday.
Transportation officials this week are working to determine if driving conditions in a construction zone were a factor in the crash.
