Benefit concert should be a treat

Published 4:05 pm Tuesday, November 16, 2010

On Tuesday evening, I had the privilege to interview three talented young musicians who were rehearsing for a benefit concert planned in December.

The Aridanne Trio is pianist Arielle Howard, 16, violinist Marianne Martinoli, 13, and cellist David Bushnell, 15. They decided to play a Christmas concert to raise money so 40 St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church members can go to World Youth Day. The annual event, a kind of pilgrimage for Catholic youth, is planned in Madrid, Spain, next summer.

Arielle and Marianne, both of Monroe, attend St. Mary of the Valley church in Snohomish with their families. David lives in Edmonds and knows Marianne through Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, where they both play. All three are homeschooled.

Arielle is one of the 30 kids planning to go to World Youth Day. The rest of the group will be adults. When the church’s pastor announced the trip, he said he wouldn’t want to turn away anyone who couldn’t afford it. That’s why church members are trying to raise money.

The trio has been practicing together at least once a week since September. They rehearsed at the Howards’ house on Tuesday. I don’t know much about chamber music, but I was moved when I heard the teens playing. Their faces reflected such a passion for music. My story about them will appear in The Herald next week.

The concert is planned for Dec. 12 at Lord Hill Farms, 12525 Old Snohomish Monroe Road. Tickets are $25 for the 2 p.m. matinee and $50 for the 7 p.m. dinner concert. The dinner concert tickets are only available until Nov. 26. To buy tickets, go to faithraisers.org or call 360-794-8945. Click here to see a flier.
