RENTON — The Washington Department of Labor & Industries has fined a Renton recycling plant nearly $63,000 after a woman was killed in an April baling machine accident.
The woman, in her 20s, was killed after trying to clear a large amount of plastic that had jammed a baling machine at Smurfit-Stone Recycling. The worker had shut off the machine and climbed into the baler to clear the plastic caught in a chute. The material fell on her. She was eventually freed but died as a result of her injuries.
Labor & Industries issued two citations against the company.
