Stop what you’re doing and watch this Fredy Montero goal

Look, I get that some of you out there will never be fans of soccer. Not enough diving, too much flopping—I get that no mater how many people try to convince you, you’re just not going to like the sport (and I also understand if you’re tired of people trying to convince you that you would love soccer if only you understood the beautiful game). I love the sport, some of you don’t, and that’s fine. But whatever your opinion of soccer, it’s worth a few seconds out of your day to see this ridiculous goal turned in by Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over the L.A. Galaxy.
You can see in the replay that there is clearly a sense of relief that washes over Montero when he finds the back of the net. He is used to scoring after leading the franchise in goals over the past three seasons, yet he was without a goal in Seattle’s first six games this season.
“It feels really good,” said Montero, who followed his goal with a summersault, then sat of the turf soaking up the moment. “That means a lot for me, the first one, and hopefully I can score more.”
Added Sounders coach Sigi Schmid: “I think you could see it after he scored it. There was definitely a sense of relief that came over him, so hopefully it’ll be the start of many.”
Montero’s goal was also huge because it helped Seattle finally beat the Galaxy, a team that has owned the Sounders over the past two seasons, winning three of four in the regular season and knocking Seattle out of the playoffs in 2010.
“It was good to get a win,” said Schmid. “It was good for us because sometimes you have a team—in Europe they call it your ‘Boogey team’—a team that sort of gives you a problem and for some reason you can’t seem to jump over them… L.A. was that team for us a little bit, but we always felt we had confidence that we could beat them and today it showed.”
Alas, unfortunately for Montero, his goal could be a candidate for MLS goal of the year, but it was not even the best in the world of soccer today thanks to this strike from Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse.
