MARYSVILLE — On Saturday afternoon Marysville Getchell played their first playoff game of any kind, in any sport. Unfortunately they will have to wait until the fall to potentially play their second, as Glacier Peak defeated the Chargers 3-1 in a 3A District 1 tournament boys soccer game.
Greydon Saunders was able to strike first for the Grizzlies in the games 23rd minute. Getchell came back with a goal of its own three minutes later from Jesus Valenzuela who was assisted by Wesco standout Javier Gomez Mora-Rey.
Having the Chargers stars score seemed to get under the Glacier Peak players skins, and provided motivation going into halftime.
One minute into the second half Branson Corwin scored a goal off a Saunders assist to break the 1-1 tie, and put the Grizzlies ahead for good.
“Javier and Jesus are very talented kids,” said Glacier Peak coach Shannon Murray. “But in the second half we just kept those two in front of us. Our guys adjusted and were always aware of their whereabouts. I think we really got them really flustered.”
Murray was also sure to give credit to Glacier Peak goalkeeper Jesus Mendoza for the teams first round playoff victory.
“(Jesus) made some real key saves. There were saves in the last 10 minutes of the first half that really helped keep the game in front of us.”
For Getchell, it put an end to the school’s most promising sports season in its second year of existence, with the team finishing with a record of 9-5-2 on the year.
With the victory, the Grizzlies advance in districts and await the winner of Shorecrest-Mount Vernon.
“This is a great win for us,” added Murray. “The first round is loser-out, and now it’s double-elimination so now we have two chances in our next three, and hopefully we advance.”
