Kiwanis fixes fence for Cocoon House
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Arlington gathered April 11 for a One Day service event. Club members made much-needed repairs on portions of a fence surrounding a Cocoon House property. The rain held off until all work was complete, and the fence now stands firm and straight.
Arlington club members involved in the project, headed by President Terry Marsh, were Al Forar, Jim Chase, Mike Blue, Bob Nelson, George Boulton, Deena Jones, Chris Jones, Denny Byrnes and Jan Bauer.
One Day is a special date set aside by Kiwanis International clubs for community service. Find out more about local Kiwanis clubs at www.kiwanis.org.
Operation School Bell gets kudos
Mary Ann McCord, chair of Operation School Bell, was given a Caring Community award April 16 by the Snohomish County Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program. The awards are given to members of the community whose donations of time and service have made a significant difference in the lives of young children.
Operation School Bell, a program of Assistance League of Everett, provides school wardrobes to more than 3,000 children each year.
School receives flag from troops
The third-grade class at St. Thomas More Parish School each year creates care packages to send to troops serving in Afghanistan through the Adopt-A-Platoon program. Students write letters, draw pictures, and add candy and chocolate.
The group often receives a response back via email from the men and women they support. Recently, the class received a U.S. flag — the same flag that troops flew at Camp Dwyer in their honor.
The program has been a benefit to students as well as the troops they support, school development director Jane Alpers wrote. “Third-graders learn about caring for those outside the community of Lynnwood, by way of showing appreciation to our troops. It also expands their knowledge of the global community.”
