Scouts honored for rescuing woman

Boy Scouts Adam Sirkis, Jordan Mielbrecht, Cameron Stout and Matt Mueller were awarded the National Medal of Merit at the Mount Baker Council Court of Honor Dinner on May 30. The Scouts are members of Snohomish Troop 91, sponsored by Gold Creek Community Church.

The Scouts were honored for helping an injured woman they encountered Aug. 17, 2014, while they were biking on the John Wayne Trail at Annette Lake. The woman had hurt her ankle and could not walk. Working in teams, the Scouts carried her safely down 1.5 miles of twisting, root-strewn trail to her and her companion’s vehicle.

Knights award scholarships

The Marysville Knights of Columbus awarded scholarships to graduating high school seniors May 27 and June 1: Alejandra Soltero (Arlington), Nathan Richards (Lake Stevens), Vanessa Ramirez (Marysville Getchell) and Nicholas Alonso (Marysville Pilchuck).

Lions recognize grads at two Everett schools

The South Everett Lions Club recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to graduating students at two local high schools: Morgan Joyce and Ken Tran (Cascade) and Patricia Gonzalez and Elmer Delgado (Mariner).

Elks help expand Whittier library

In May, Everett Elks members asked Whittier Elementary School librarian Jocelyn Sievers-Bailey for a wish list of books for her students. In June, Exalted Ruler Justin Bailey delivered a box of 33 new books — valued at more than $400 — to the school where some third-grade students, Sievers-Bailey and Principal Tony Wentworth were pleased to receive them.

Sterbenz earns credential

Everett Emergency Management’s Lynn Sterbenz recently received a Certified Emergency Manager credential from the CEM Commission. The designation is the highest honor of professional achievement available from the International Association of Emergency Managers.

Corrections employees receive honors

Six employees at the Monroe Correction Complex received Department of Corrections Annual Agency Awards on June 5, recognizing their work for the department. Each year, staff members are nominated by their colleagues. Recipients are honored during a statewide ceremony in Olympia.

The following Monroe employees and volunteer received awards: Susan Biller, Employee of the Year; Michael Hathaway, Employee of the Year; Charlotte Joplin, Support Staff of the Year; Jonathan Scott, Correctional Officer of the Year; Dennis Stoycoff, Volunteer of the Year; Michelle Henderling, Innovation Team Award, PREA Implementation Team.

Four women awarded by Zonta

The Zonta Club of Everett recently awarded scholarship grants to four Snohomish County women.

The Young Women in Public Affairs award was given to Caylyn Rich from Stanwood. The award recognizes young women who have demonstrated leadership skills and interest in civic causes.

The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship award was presented to Keyre Figueroa, a student at Trinity Lutheran College in Everett. The award helps women pursuing undergraduate degrees in business overcome gender barriers from the classroom to the boardroom.

Two women earned the Zonta Club of Everett Women in Transition Scholarship: Kristina Jorgensen and Kari Mikesell. This award assists women re-entering the workforce to further their education.

Normanna honors Archbishop grad

The Sons of Norway Normanna Lodge’s scholarship winner is Connor Sand, a graduating senior from Archbishop Murphy High School whose parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are all longtime Normanna members.

Teachers described Sand as well-rounded, hard-working and a leader who excelled in both sports and academics. He also was active as a volunteer coach and mentor. Sand plans to study at Pacific Lutheran University this fall, where he will play baseball and study for a degree in either secondary education or business management.
