Volunteers honored for lives of service

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, sponsored by Catholic Community Services, held its annual Recognition Event on June 11, thanking 175 volunteers from across Snohomish County.

This year, 14 RSVP volunteers received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, given to those with more than 4,000 documented volunteer hours. It is given through local service agencies by the national President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation and includes a pin and letter from President Barack Obama.

Lifetime honorees from RSVP: Bob Bayman of Tulalip, John D. Baker of Brier, Maxine Bires of Stanwood, Sharon Cordisco and Bonnie Drake of Monroe, Cherie Estok of Snohomish, Francis “Jiggs” Franchi of Arlington, Paul Jaenicke, Linda McCullough and Mary Hulka of Edmonds, Ella Krull of Granite Falls, Jan Link and Pat Colyer of Mukilteo, Claudette Martinez and Dorothy Morehouse of Lynnwood, Daryl Moses and Pat Westfall of Marysville, and E. Jean Nielsen and Toki Tonooka of Everett.

Meanwhile, during Darrington Day on May 30, Janet Cabe of Darrington also was honored with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her service, which includes helping to organize the community’s memorial dinners.

DAR donates money, blankets to help children

A small local group of women, the Marcus Whitman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, on June 13 presented Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue with a check for $728.27 and also gave Everett Fire Chaplain John Blake 20 blankets to be used to comfort children in times of need. Honoring Old Glory

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 of Edmonds marked Flag Day on June 14 by lowering the weathered flag in Edmonds City Park and raising a new and larger one in its place. Participants in the ceremony included veterans of the Korean War, Vietnam and the Iraq campaign. Mayor Dave Earling and parks manager Rich Lindsay also participated.

The Y honors outstanding volunteers

The YMCA of Snohomish County honored its outstanding policy, program, youth, and financial development volunteers at a special recognition breakfast June 10.

The following individuals were recognized as the 2014-2015 YMCA of Snohomish County Volunteers of the Year, representing more than 1,947 volunteers who donated a total of 35,673 hours.
