Local beer winners from the Washington State Fair

Here’s a look at the local winners from the Agriculture/Horticulture Department’s Beer and Wine Making contest at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup.

The contest included over 40 different beer and wine classes, with everything from a yellow plum wine to vegetable beer. First and second place winners were awarded a rosette and a cash premium, while third place winners were awarded a rosette. Prizes were also given for “Best in Category,” Best in Show,” and “Best Label.”

Entries were judged based on bouquet, aroma, flavor and body as well as judging points specific to beer or wine. Each beer and wine was judged on its own merit by more than one judge.

Light American Lager: Corinne Laverman-Little, Everett, first place

Blonde Ale: Erika Worthen, Monroe, third place

Irish Red Ale: David Hobson, Bothell, third place

American Amber Ale: David Hobson, Bothell, third place

American IPA: Erika Worthen, Monroe, second place; Corinne Laverman-Little, Everett, third place

Weizen/Weissbier: Erika Worthen, Monroe, second place

Saison: Erika Worthen, Monroe, third place

Fruit Beer: Brigid Tull, Everett, third place

Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer: Brigid Tull, Everett, third place

Other Smoked Beer: Erika Worthen, Monroe, third place

Specialty Beer: Warren Clark, Everett, second place

Open Category Mead: David Hobson, Bothell, third place
