Choo, choo: Model railway in Edmonds depot

The Swamp Creek and Western Railroad Association holds its annual holiday open house, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Edmonds Amtrak depot, 210 Railroad St. Admission is free.

See 400 feet of HO track that passes through miniature towns and detailed scenery. The route models travel from southwestern Washington near the Columbia River, over White Pass and into the central part of the state. It’s a route that was surveyed, considered and nearly constructed by three transcontinental railroads in the late 1800s.

The layout is 4 feet above the floor. Small children will have to be lifted to see the displays. There is limited disability access.

Ding, ding: Holiday trolley tours in Lynnwood

Santa and Mrs. Claus will pay a visit to the Lynnwood-Alderwood Manor Heritage Association’s holiday open house, 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Park, 19903 Poplar Way. Bring your camera.

The Interurban trolley Car 55 will be open for tours. The trolley ran between Seattle and Everett from 1910 to 1939. By the time it shut down, homes and businesses had multiplied along the route, helping form communities we know today as Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood. A 50-piece band sent it on its last run. “Another monument to man’s winning of the West will be hushed.”

Bring a nonperishable food item for the Lynnwood Food Bank.
