Two local schools were among nine statewide to receive 2016-17 Title I, Part A Academic Achievement Awards. Each award comes with a $10,000 grant.

Odyssey Elementary School in the Mukilteo School District was recognized for significantly raising scores in math and English language arts.

Garfield Elementary School in the Everett School District was recognized for significantly raising scores in English language arts.

Title I is a federal funding program for schools in heavily low-income neighborhoods. Such schools often have lower test scores and face various challenges, such as higher instances of student turnover and English language proficiency.

The Academic Achievement Awards aim to highlight schools overcoming the odds. The competitive program looks at “student growth percentiles” and state average scores on the Smarter Balanced Assessments over two years.

At Garfield, staff review test scores “early and often.” Teachers meet weekly to identify students who are struggling, and work together to offer support and sometimes re-teach content. For those who need help in reading, parents are given a reading plan to help boost skills at home.
