5 young artists receive local Scholastic best of show awards

EVERETT — The talents of many Snohomish County young fine artists are on display this month at the Schack Art Center.

The annual Scholastic Art Awards program gives thousands of students throughout the U.S. an opportunity to stretch in their artistic endeavors while earning local recognition. Founded in 1923, the awards program is the country’s largest and longest-running of its kind. One of the most active counties in the nation is Snohomish, where more than more than 900 entries were submitted for this year’s Scholastic awards program.

Jurors selected five outstanding pieces, which received the American Vision Nominee/Best of Show awards for Snohomish County. They are:

“Passing Time” by Mckenzie Beavin, a senior at Meadowdale High School; “25th Hour” by Ella Corwin, a sophomore at The Art Workshop; “Enough” by Kristina Golonko, a sophomore at Mariner High School; “Stitched” by Hanna Noh, a senior at Edmonds Woodway High School; and “King of the Jungle” by Amanda Parks, a senior at Stanwood High School.

In addition, the Schack has announced that Jenny Ro, a student at J Art Academy and senior at Kamiak High School, is the recipient of the annual “Susan Jane Russell Art Scholarship.”

This cash award of $1,000 is given to an outstanding art student who plans to attend a community college, college, university or art school in the fall of 2017, where he or she will major in the visual arts, arts education or have an art-related focus.

All winners of the local Scholastic awards were honored Feb. 8 at Everett Civic Auditorium and an exhibit opening reception at the Schack. Find a list of these gold, silver and honorable mention winners in the Applause section on Page D1 of today’s newspaper.

The public is invited to view the Scholastic Art Portfolio Exhibit through Feb. 26 in the Emerging Young Artists’ Gallery at the Schack. As the 2017 Russell Art Scholarship recipient, Ro will have her own display section in the portfolio exhibit.

A display of the individual entries and award-winning pieces also will be featured in the Schack’s Mezzanine Gallery through Feb. 26.

The Regional Scholastic Art Awards are sponsored by the Schack Art Center, Everett Cultural Arts Commission, The Boeing Company, BNSF Railway Foundation and H’Arts Patrons, with in-kind support from Everett Public Schools.

Donating their time to serve as judges this year were Jo Andersson, Melana Bontrager, Gina Ostman Burrill, Cindy Carper-Morris, Terry Divyak, Nikki Gardner, Elise Harper, Jim Hays, Susie Howell, Gale Johansen, Mile Labitzke, Rob Lancaster, Sandra Lepper, Mike O’Day, Julie Perrine, Juliette Ricci Lagman, Mary Ann Tokars-King and Frances Velling.

Award-winning images will also be available for viewing at schack.org after March 1. American Vision/Best of Show and Gold Key artwork has been sent in digital form to New York for the National Scholastic Art Awards program. Notification of National Award recipients is anticipated to be announced in mid-March.
