Each year the Snohomish County Branch NAACP honors Martin Luther King Jr. with the Prodigies for Peace writing and art contest. Students submit essays or art in response to King’s message of peace. Winners this year hailed from the Everett, Edmonds, Mukilteo and Marysville school districts.

First-place awards went to Emily Konch (James Monroe Elementary), Lillianne Hansen (View Ridge Elementary), Ashley Liang (Heatherwood Middle), Ilana O’Neal (View Ridge Elementary), Jaidyn Wilson (James Monroe Elementary), Owen Rivera (Emerson Elementary), Natalie Heck (College Place Middle School), and Phoenix Cloutier (College Place Middle School).

Second-place awards went to Gracelyn Deuter (James Monroe Elementary), Tessa Hahn (James Monroe), Taylor Byrd (Heatherwood Middle School), Noa Grace Calderwood (Whittier Elementary), Fred Vasquez (Discovery Elementary), Katrina Gutenkauf (Sunnyside Elementary) and Zubair Ishaque (College Place Middle School).

Third-place awards went to Valeria Guerrero (Mill Creek Elementary), Luke Hammon (James Monroe Elementary), Six Brazelton (Heatherwood Middle School), Avanni Napier (Whittier Elementary), Brooklyn Batingan (Discovery Elementary, Valerie Guttierrez (View Ridge Elementary), Teagan Tautolo (College Place Middle School) and Breanne Nixon (Evergreen Middle School).

As part of the program, the local NAACP each year also recognizes a community member for the significant role she or he plays in the lives of students of color. This year, Jackson High School teacher Rose Smith received the President’s Award.

Smith helps with the Everett School District’s Youth Development Program, My Achievers Program, and the Students of Color Career Conference.

“Students look up to Rose for her leadership and support. This is a well-deserved honor,” Superintendent Gary Cohn said.
