Buoys to help track violations of lake safety rules

LAKE STEVENS — Navigational buoys have been placed in the water near Wyatt and Lundeen parks, and police have created a database to track violations of lake safety rules.
City leaders in June approved a pilot program meant to increase safety on Lake Stevens. A committee will study the results to determine whether it should continue, expand or end.
Plans include: new maps and rule signs at beaches; distribution of lake rules online and by mail; tracking times and locations of violations for targeted enforcement; installing buoys near Wyatt and Lundeen parks; and follow-up interviews with nearby homeowners.
Buoys went in Wednesday. They mark a no-wake zone, about 100 feet from the nearest dock, to help lake users, namely boaters and paddle sport enthusiasts, avoid collisions.
Postcards are being sent to homeowners around the lake.
