Hazelwood Elementary School in Lynnwood celebrated its 50th birthday Nov. 2 with food, entertainment and a time of sharing memories. The school opened in fall 1967.

Some of the original 1967 staff and student body were on hand, as well as other alumni. One young couple, who had the same first-grade teacher at Hazelwood, announced that they were now engaged to be married. Jan Link, retired Hazelwood principal, shared how special the school was in her life and in the community.

Also on hand was former music teacher Robin Wood, who wrote a school song in 1993.

Current music teacher Sarah Moyer asked Wood if she remembered the original song. After prompting her with the first words, Wood brightened. “The tune came flowing from her lips,” Moyer recalled.

This year, Moyer wrote a new school song, “Hazelwood Way.”

“The ‘Hazelwood Way’ is a motto that the students say each morning, and I thought putting it to music would serve as a good tool for remembering that we are ‘kind, safe, and responsible,’” Moyer said.

The lyrics to both songs are posted below:

“Hazelwood Eagles School Song” (1993)

Clap your hands for a great school

The best we’ve ever seen

Hazelwood Elementary

Where we can be the best we can be

Where we can learn and grow and make new friends

And there’s always something new to see

And where our teachers care ‘bout each one of us

Hazelwood — the place to be!

Hazelwood — come on and see!

Hazelwood — the place for me!

“Hazelwood Way” (2017)

We are Hazelwood

A community or learners

We are Hazelwood

We are kind safe and responsible

Hazelwood

Where were grow and learn and play

As we live the Hazelwood Way

Soar like eagles

Wave your colors in the sky

Help a neighbor

Always trying to do right

Asking questions

‘Cause we’re learning all the time

As we live the Hazelwood Way!
