What happens when?
Curiosity Academy classes that bring STEM experiences to school-age kids continue at the Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave.
“Make Your Own Magic,” 4 p.m. Jan. 5: Learn the science behind simple magic tricks and practice them.
“Mystery Box,” 4 p.m. Jan. 12: A mystery STEM experience awaits.

Dementia education
Families and caregivers can hear first-hand stories and get resources for helping relatives with dementia at an American Association of University Women meeting, 1 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Camano Island Library, 848 N Sunrise Blvd. Arrive a half-hour early for light snacks.
The speakers include Ginny Berube, a specialist for Island Senior Resources at the Camano Center, and Naomi Wark, a local resident who was a caregiver for five years and recently wrote a novel based on her experience.

Help for caregivers
Several local support groups exist for caregivers, to help those dealing with the challenges of unpaid caregiving. Here are some of them:
The Alzheimer’s Association keeps a list of local support groups. Groups for caregivers are available in Arlington, Bothell, Edmonds, Everett, Lynnwood and Snohomish.

A Caring for the Caregiver support group, to help those who are dealing with the challenges of unpaid caregiving, meets at 10 a.m. third Tuesdays at the Ken Baxter Community Center, 514 Delta Ave., Marysville.

WAYS TO HELP
Banks battle to benefit food bank
Help crown the “Heavy Weight Champion Against Hunger” in the annual Snohomish Chamber of Commerce Battle of the Banks to Benefit the Bank. Through Jan. 3, member banks compete to collect money and nonperishable food to benefit the Snohomish Community Food Bank.
Participating banks are Coastal Community Bank, 928 Avenue D; Columbia Bank, 167 Lincoln St.; Opus Bank, 1101 Avenue D; Peoples Bank at Fred Meyer, 2801 Bickford Ave.; and Washington Federal, 620 Second St.

Tree lights for scholarships
Donate $5 to sponsor a light on a living fir tree at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., to benefit the city of Edmonds’ Youth Scholarship Fund, which helps children participate in recreation programs. The tree will be lit through Jan. 2. Then it will be planted at a local park.
