MONROE — At least two people were injured in a crash that for a time blocked both directions of U.S. 2 Friday evening.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. east of Monroe near 227th Street SE, according to the state Department of Transportation. Officials were advising people to delay trips into the area or to seek alternative routes.

More details about what caused the crash were not immediately available. Washington State Patrol trooper Heather Axtman just before 7 p.m. tweeted photographs that showed two mangled passenger vehicles.

“Injuries are serious but not believed to be life threatening,” she wrote.

One patient was seriously injured and another had minor injuries, according to Snohomish County Fire District 7. Both were taken to area hospitals.
