Gun-free law makes schools a target

Regarding Herald columnist Sid Schwab’s Feb. 17 column, “Is turning schools into fortresses our only option?” Sid, that is not the only option.

With the passage of the Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994, signed into law by Bill Clinton, we as a nation effectively made our schools shooting galleries. This act did the following for anyone with intent to harm anyone:

1. Guarantees an undefended target.

2. Guarantees maximum carnage.

3. Guarantees a spotlight for their crime.

Rolling back that horrendous law would do the following:

1. Cause doubt in the mind of the criminal. Go to a school that may or may not have teachers with weapons?

2. If item No. 1 was not a deterrent and shooting started, the criminal would get about five feet before being taken down.

Given there are over 600,000 guns stolen annually no amount of legislation ever will solve the problem, ever. You cannot legislate against criminals, the mentally ill or pure evil. If you could, there would be no crime. Sure, the laws may make you feel good, but as my grandma always said, “Laws are only made for honest people.”
