Free park-ing: The next day to visit Washington State Parks without an entrance fee is on Autumn Day, Nov. 23. Other free days are Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day), Jan. 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), March 19 (State Park’s birthday), April 14 (Spring Day), April 22 (Earth Day), June 2 (National Trails Day), June 9 (National Get Outdoors Day), June 10 (Fishing Day) and Aug. 25 (National Park Service’s birthday). Berthusen Park hike: Shed a few pounds gained from Thanksgiving dinner and join the Everett Hiking and Backpacking Committee on Nov. 24 as members hike Berthusen Park in Lynden. The 7-mile hike will include small elevation gains and a network of trails that wind through old-growth forest. Bring water, snacks, appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. Meet at Eastmont Park & Ride, 2020 El Capitan Way, Everett. Meeting time has yet to be decided. More at www.themountaineers.org.
Dirty Harry’s Peak: Help construct a new trail to Dirty Harry’s Peak near Snoqualmie Pass from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24. The construction will include rock work, such as constructing rock walls and rock steps, with provided rock bars, pick mattocks and griphoists. Expect to be physically active at your own pace for up to six hours on uneven terrain. The work is open ages 10 and older; kids under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and a parental consent form must be signed for anyone younger than 18. Wear boots, long pants, work gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, eye protection and bring lunch, water, a rain jacket, extra warm clothing, a backpack and enthusiasm. More at www.wta.org.
Sno-Park permits: Attention snow enthusiasts: Washington State Parks Winter Recreation Program’s Sno-Park permits are available for purchase online and at various vendors statewide through April 30. The permits allow visitors to park in cleared, designated parking lots with access to areas around the state for skiing, skijoring, snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowshoeing, tubing and other winter fun. Splitboard 101: A free “Splitboard 101” class with outdoor sports store Weston Backcountry is at 6 p.m. Dec. 4 at Alderwood REI, 3000 184th St. SW, Lynnwood. Splitboards are snowboards that can be separated into ski-like parts for climbing slopes and connected for descent, and most used in the backcountry. Experts from Weston Backcountry will share tips on which splitboard to choose, how to plan your first backcountry trip and provide avalanche education. Space is limited. More at www.rei.com.
Great Himalaya Trail: Vince Gayman, a Seattle native, will give a free presentation on his trek of Nepal’s Great Himalaya Trail at 6 p.m. Dec. 6 at Alderwood REI, 3000 18th St. SW, Lynnwood. The traverse covered 1,100 miles and 20 passes above 16,000 feet. The little-traveled route included many technically difficult portions, and traveled through the many diverse cultures of Nepal.
