Large sinkholes appear on road after water main breaks

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Two large sinkholes appeared on a Mountlake Terrace road after a water main broke Thursday morning, according to a statement released by the city.

Water from the old cast iron main traveled under the asphalt of 43th Place W near the Snohomish-King county line.

The incident shut down 244th Street SW, which is also known as 205th Street NE in King County and defines the counties’ shared border. The road was closed between 45th Avenue W and Cedar Way in Mountlake Terrace — between 33rd Avenue NE and 37th Avenue NE on the King County side, in adjoining Lake Forest Park.

People living along 43rd Avenue W were without water Thursday morning and afternoon. The state Department of Ecology was called to check on sediment pouring into Lyon Creek.

Crews on Thursday were assessing damage and making repairs. The roads were to be closed through the night Thursday into Friday.
