Learn about local landscaping history

Historian Laurence Cotton is scheduled to talk about the landscape work of Fredrick Law Olmsted, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 29, at McMenamins Anderson School, 18607 Bothell Way NE. Olmsted helped plan Central Park in New York City. His son, John Charles Olmsted, designed several Seattle parks in the early 1900s. This free event is open to all.

Garden variety

The Monroe community garden wants input and volunteers to help plan, plant, weed and harvest. Learn all about it 10 a.m. Jan. 26 at Monroe Boys & Girls Club. In the past three years, the garden has harvested more than 7,865 pounds of vegetables and fruit for the Sky Valley Food Bank.

The garden is next to the food bank, near the Monroe Boys & Girls Club and Monroe Community Senior Center at 233 Sky River Parkway.

Feedback for police

Everett residents are being asked to participate in a public safety survey. The results will be incorporated into the police department’s strategic plan. The survey, which can be found at www.everettwa.gov/EPDplan, will be available through the end of January.

Free clothes

Everybody’s Closet will be open with free clothing for the family in a party-like setting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at Advent Lutheran Church, 4306 132nd St. SE, Mill Creek.

WAYS TO GIVE

Donate cellphones

Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County takes donations of cellphones with chargers. Even without service, cellphones can be used to access 911 emergency services. The nonprofit gives them to clients who need the phones for safety reasons. Drop off donations at the New and Again Thrift Shoppe, 3010 Grand Ave. in Everett, or at other sites in Everett, Brier, Mountlake Terrace and Stanwood that are listed at dvs-snoco.org.

Tutors needed at EvCC

Everett Community College’s Volunteer Literacy Program seeks volunteers who can tutor adults learning basic reading, writing and math skills and students learning English. An informal interview and a training workshop are required.

Parkinson’s help

Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation support groups, for those with Parkinson’s or other forms of dementia and their caregivers, are in Bothell, Everett, Lynnwood and Stanwood.

A movement and dance class to help Parkinson’s patients get control of their movement again is 2 p.m. Thursdays at the Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. Classes are $10 members, $12 non-members. Wheelchair and walker friendly. Supporters attend free. Drop-ins welcome.
