All shook up

The Big Shaker, a mobile earthquake simulator with the ability to produce shaking equivalent to a magnitude-8.0 earthquake, will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, at 3813 Rucker Ave., Everett.

People can experience the simulation and also learn about disaster preparedness. Food trucks will be at the event. Free.

Marysville restoration

Plant trees and learn about salmon habitat at Strawberry Fields Park in Marysville, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at 6100 152nd St.

Tools and gloves are provided, along with refreshments. Hosted by the Adopt A Stream Foundation.

Upcycle fair

Explorer Middle School invites the public to attend its second annual Upcycle Craft Fair and Silent Auction from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the gym on campus. The seventh-grade science students, as part of their Human Impact unit of study, have created art and functional items out of materials that would normally be thrown away or recycled. They are selling their creations to pay for field trips and educational opportunities.

Spaghetti dinner

Support music and fine arts education at the annual Explorer Music Boosters’ Spaghetti Dinner and Auction from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 26. Dinner includes spaghetti, salad, bread and beverage, and dessert is available for purchase. There will be a silent and a live auction. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for students, and free for children 5 and under. VIP seating is available at a premium.

Presentation on artist

Researcher Barbara Sjoholm is scheduled to give a presentation on Danish artist, Emilie Demant Hatt, during the Whidbey Island Daughters of Norway meeting at 9:15 a.m. June 8, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 6309 S. Wilson Place, Clinton.

Hatt lived in Finland in the early 1900s, and wrote a book about her experiences, “With the Lapps of the High Mountains.” Sjoholm has translated that book to English.

OPPORTUNITY

Install smoke alarms

The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to install smoke alarms around Everett on April 27. There also are later events in Seattle and Tacoma.

The organization hopes that 400 people in the area sign up to help. Nationwide, the group tries to install 100,000 free devices each year.

Ferry meeting

Washington State Ferries will host a Mukilteo Multimodal Project open house meeting at 5 p.m. May 23 at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo. A community meeting is at 6 p.m. Topics include proposed changes to passenger fares and the new ferry terminal.
