EVERETT — The Daily Herald received six awards in the 2019 Northwest Excellence in Journalism competition by the Society of Professional Journalists regional chapter.

The paper competed in the second largest division based on newsroom size in the contest for organizations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. Award categories are tiered into first-place winner and runner-up.

The Herald earned a first-place staff award for General Excellence in the region.

Herald writers and a photographer were recognized in these categories:

• Olivia Vanni, Sports Action Photography, first-place: “Seahawks Doug Baldwin tips the ball in fourth quarter catch”

• Andrea Brown, Column, first-place: “Groovy! The dude has a vinyl stash of, like, 97,000 records”; “Captain Walmart isn’t make-believe, he’s a real superhero”; “This guy takes his parrot everywhere he goes in Everett”

• Evan Thompson, Arts & Entertainment, runner-up: “Write a book in 30 days: Writers prepare for novel challenge”

• Nick Patterson, Sports Column, runner-up: “The WHL’s postseason playoff format has major flaws”;It’s time for the Mariners to tear their roster apart”; “If you haven’t already, be prepared to fall in love with hockey

• Olivia Vanni, Sports Feature Photography, runner-up: “Skate America”
