Trail closures

Access to Glacier Peak and the Pacific Crest Trail will be closed via the North Fork Sauk Trail, from Aug. 8–15. That trail will be shut down for maintenance during that time between Mackinaw Shelter and the Pacific Crest Trail in the Darrington Ranger District.

The closure is necessary for safety. Workers will be using explosives to reconstruct the trails. Debris will probably roll down the steep slopes and into the closed area.

Annual Navy drill

Naval Station Everett is part of the annual Citadel Rumble Aug. 5–9, an exercise to prepare for a major earthquake. Other stations that are involved include Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Naval Base Kitsap and Naval Magazine Indian Island.

All the bases practice together how to prepare for, respond to and recover from a big earthquake that could trigger other disasters. Those who live nearby might notice loudspeaker announcements, and a bigger emergency response than usual.
