Winterhawks deny Silvertips chance to clinch division title

PORTLAND — The celebration will have to wait. For now.

The Portland Winterhawks scored four goals in the third period and rallied to beat the Everett Silvertips 5-2 on Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Everett was on track to clinch the U.S. Division title after winning six games in a row, but will have to wait at least one more game to earn the banner after falling to Portland.

The Silvertips, who still hold a nine-point division lead over the Winterhawks, will get another chance to clinch the title with a win over Spokane on Sunday and a Portland loss on either Saturday or Sunday.

Everett took a 2-1 lead into the final period thanks to goals from Hunter Campbell and Jackson Berezowski in the first period.

Portland quickly turned things around when Simon Knak tied the game in the third with his second goal and Mason Mannek scored to give the Winterhawks the lead.

Portland then added insurance goals from Kade Nolan and Tyson Kozak to seal the game.

Dustin Wolf stopped 34 of the 38 shots he faced for Everett (15-4-0-0).

Dante Giannuzzi stopped 18 of 20 shots for Portland (9-6-3-0).
