EUGENE — Spencer Packard grounded into a double play with the tying run on second and one out in the top of the ninth inning as an Everett AquaSox rally fell just short in a 6-5 loss to the Eugene Emeralds on Friday night.

After Eugene broke open a tied game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-3 lead, Everett quickly loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth on a base hit from Dariel Gomez and consecutive walk by Mike Salvatore and Victor Labrada.

Robert Perez Jr. followed with a two-run single to pull the AquaSox to within one at 6-5. But Justin Lavey struck out swinging and Packard grounded into the double play to end the threat and the game.

Gomez finished 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, and Charlie Welch added a double for Everett (57-66).

Carter Williams had three hits and Andy Thomas, Jared Dupere and Jimmy Glowenke had two hits each for Eugene (74-47).
