Mukilteo teen wins Congressional Art Competition
Ohnshim Kim, of Mukilteo, won top honors in the Congressional Art Competition for the Second Congressional District. Her charcoal drawing, “A Walk,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building for a year.
Kristine White, of Everett, received second place for her colored pencil drawing, “Just Jazzy.”
Megan Matson, of Lynnwood, and Bracken Hibbard, of Everett, received honorable mentions.
Rep. Rick Larsen’s office received 33 submissions for the competition from across the Second District. Photos of all the submissions are on Larsen’s Facebook page.
Stanwood teen awarded scholarship
Grange Insurance Association awarded Morgan Shimkus, of Stanwood, a $1,000 scholarship.
The company received 53 applications from teens whose families are policy holders and awarded 28 scholarships this year. Based in Seattle, the company also operates in Oregon, Idaho, California, Colorado and Wyoming.
Cedar Park teen wins Letters contest
Emily Maxfield, a senior at Cedar Park Christian School, was the high school champion in the 2016 Letters About Literature contest sponsored by the Washington State Library and the Library of Congress. Maxfield penned her letter to Sherman Alexie about the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.”
National Merit winners
The following students earned $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation: Matthew Lee, of Bothell, Henry M. Jackson High School; and Janis Shin, of Snohomish, Woodinville High School.
Johnston a Presidential Scholar semifinalist
Haeley Johnston, a graduating senior from Mountlake Terrace High School, was named a semifinalist for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, for career and technical education. Johnston is the only Snohomish County student in the list of 689 semifinalists.
Rotary honors Students of the Month
The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club named its Students of the Month for April.
Cascade High School senior Jaidacyn Madrigal is a student athlete and active volunteer. Last summer, she attended a paleontology camp. Madigral plans to attend Sacramento State University and major in broadcast communications.
Nancy Jong carries a 4.0 GPA at Kamiak High School, where she is second in her class. Jong is an accomplished pianist, has interned at Boeing and volunteers. She plans to major in mechanical engineering at the University of California Berkeley.
Yasmine Myers is an active volunteer and wheelchair track athlete from Mariner High School. As a sophomore, she was the torch bearer for the state Special Olympics. Myers plans to become a registered nurse.
