Volunteers tackle wetlands project

Students, teachers and parents under the direction of Rocky Wigre at Cedar Wood Elementary in Bothell have volunteered their time to complete a wetlands project at the school.

Volunteers filled cans full of garbage and trucks full of invasive Scotch broom over the course of six weeks and with the help of a $250 Pilchuck Audubon Classroom Teacher Conservation award, planted more than 150 trees from the Snohomish County Conservation District. Snohomish County donated 600 live stake trees.

Students volunteered for the project during their recesses from January to March. About 100 people participated in a school-wide volunteer day organized by Wigre and her students in March.

The project is nearly complete now, but Wigre plans to apply for another award in order to finish the project over the course of the current school year.

Teachers throughout Snohomish County are eligible to apply for the award.

Applications can be found at www.pilchuckaudubon.org.
