Zonta Club names new officers

The 2009-2010 officers and board of directors of the Zonta Club of Everett were announced at the service club’s annual installment dinner in May.

Honored were Carol Johnson of Everett, Cynthia Weaver of Arlington, president-elect Judy Gish of Marysville, president Norlonna Funkhouser of Camano Island, Patty Lervick of Stanwood, Michelle Date of Arlington, Jean Ann French of Mukilteo and treasurer Janet Jolley of Camano Island.

Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Emergency services personnel honored

The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency is one of the first emergency management agencies in the nation, and the only one in the state, to have all staff members earn the Certified Emergency Manager credential. The credential, awarded by the International Association of Emergency Managers, is the highest level of professional achievement in emergency management.

Lyn Gross, Chandra Fox, Jamie Gravelle and Daniel Good were honored.

The Emergency Services Coordinating Agency is the emergency management agency that provides disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery support to the cities of Brier, Edmonds, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Woodinville and Woodway.

Symphony helps young musicians

Cascade Symphony members presented scholarships to four young musicians at the orchestra’s final concert of the 2008-09 season.

Erika Burns, a Bothell High School graduate, has played violin for 14 years. She served as concertmaster of the Everett Youth Symphony and performed as a soloist with Everett Symphony. She plans to attend Western Washington University.

Sung Eun Kangis, a Kamiak High School graduate, has played flute for 10 years, with three of those years in Seattle Youth Symphony. She plans to attend Bryn Mawr College.

Kathleen Shin, also a Kamiak High School graduate, has played flute in Everett Youth Symphony and the Seattle Youth Symphony. She plans to attend Cornish College of the Arts.

In addition, Tedi Simon and the orchestra presented the Mori Simon Scholarship, which memorializes Mori Simon, a musical icon in the Seattle area for more than 40 years. He worked with such celebrities as Henry Mancini, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Jimmy Durante, and played with the NBC orchestra under the direction of Meredith Wilson, composer of “The Music Man.” He played string bass in the Seattle Symphony for 36 years and organized orchestras, including at the 5th Avenue Musical Theater Company.

Rachel Wong is the first winner of the Simon scholarship. A Lynnwood High School graduate, she has played violin for 11 years and has performed as a soloist with Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra and Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra. She also has served as concertmaster of the Academy Chamber Orchestra and Everett Youth Symphony. She is a winner of the Seattle Young Artist Music Festival Concerto Competition. She plans to attend the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas.

Cascade Symphony, led by Michael Miropolsky, is a volunteer community orchestra with annual seasons that include chamber orchestra concerts, children’s concerts, small ensemble concerts and four full orchestra concerts at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Volunteers help with Night Out

More than 700 people celebrated the Mountlake Terrace National Night Out Against Crime event on August 4. The festivities were organized by the city police and volunteer Community Policing Advisory Board members.

The night included the landing of a medical transport helicopter, face painters, karaoke, bouncy houses, free popcorn, cotton candy and hot dogs, along with strawberry shortcake from the Lions Club.

Displays included a canine team, a Navy Humvee, a fire truck and aid car from Fire District 1, along with service information from civic organizations.

National Night Out is funded through local sponsorships and donations of food, supplies and equipment. Premera of Mountlake Terrace sponsored the live concert by the Spazmatics. Caricature artist Steve Hartley was sponsored by the Friends of the Arts. Other sponsors were Albertsons, D&D Meats, HomeStreet Bank, Jerry Smith, Mountlake Terrace Business Association, Millers Rent-All, Pepsi, Prime Pizza, QFC, Target, Thriftway and Retrofit.

Marysville Scout earns Eagle rank

Thomas Esser, 17, a member of Boy Scout Troop 84, has earned his Eagle Scout rank, the highest awarded by the Boy Scouts of America.

Thomas is the son of Bill and Kandace Esser of Marysville. He has been a scout since the age of 8.

To earn his Eagle Scout award, Thomas, along with the help of park ranger Kevin Lease, led and organized a team of scouts and adults in restoring several areas of Wenberg State Park, now a county park.

Thomas has been a member of Troop 84, chartered by the Masons, for five years. He has worked on community service projects and held leadership positions including assistant and senior patrol leader. Thomas earned 25 merit badges and was elected to the Order of the Arrow, an elite subset of Boy Scouts whose membership is voted on by fellow scouts.

A junior at Marysville- Pilchuck High School, he plays percussion in symphonic band, pep band, jazz band and marching band. Thomas is the drumline captain and a member of the National Honor Society.

He plans to attend Everett Community College as part of the running start program.

Girl Scouts donate to food banks

North Everett Girl Scouts Rebecca Schubert, Chandler Fish, Elizabeth Ackerson, Cassidy Fish, Ann Barrett and Dana Smith collected 1,259 pounds of food on Aug. 8 and donated it to the Volunteers of America Everett Food Bank.

The members of Girl Scout Service Unit 224 said they were pleased with the community response to their food drive at Albertsons and QFC food stores.
