50 YEARS AGO (1960)

Bert Vanderwilt, Everett High School principal since 1938, today announced his retirement from the position at the end of the school year. This would bring to a close a 38-year tour of duty in the high school that began in 1922. The veteran educator left the job in 1940 when the Everett National Guard was called to active duty.

Robert D. Best, Herald publisher, announced the sale of the old Herald building at Colby and Wall to Everett Title Building Co. The building would be completely remodeled inside and outside.

25 YEARS AGO (1985)

Historian and Northwest author Don Berry was conducting a workshop on the technique of collecting local history at Lowell Elementary School. Berry was working with historians David Dilgard and Margaret Riddle of the Everett Public Library on the Lowell Project, a historical study of the Lowell neighborhood.

A sizable group of friends gathered at Weller’s restaurant at Island Crossing recently to roast Richard Post, who was retiring as superintendent of the Arlington School District at the end of the school year. Naturally, it was called the “Post Roast.”
