50 YEARS AGO (1959)

Rep. Jack Westland was appointed today to the powerful Joint Committee on Atomic Engery. That made him the second person from Everett on the committee, joining Sen. Henry M. Jackson.

Everett’s new Hunting and Fishing Club got off to a good start Friday evening at the PUD employees’ lounge naming John Martinis its first president. Elected to serve with him were Bob Berlin, vice president, and A.C. Conn, secretary-treasurer. Al Countryman, Les Dams and Jack LeGros were named to the first board of trustees.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

Winifred Edeen enjoyed a bit of summer at her south Everett residence this week. A hummingbird was dining daily on sugar water from a feeder outside her kitchen window. She said it showed up this week and visits several times a day.

Lucille Smith said she was so interested in correct English and grammar that she joined a national organization named Society for the Advancement of Good English. She reported that the “dunce cap of the year” award for 1983 went to Miller Brewing Co. for its “less calories” and “us ex-big-leaguers” television commercials.
