Lots and lots of cuddly stuffy love

The Martha Lake Elementary School PTA had huge success with this year’s Teddy Bear Patrol. Students donated a record 908 teddy bears and other stuffed animals. In addition, Skanska, the company building the new Alderwood Middle School, participated in the drive as a community project. In all, the school was able to donate 1,055 stuffed animals to Snohomish County Fire District 1. The amount was double the school’s original goal of 500 teddy bears.

Snohomish principal honored for leadership

The National Association of Secondary School Principals named Snohomish High School Assistant Principal Greg Barker as an inaugural member of its newly formed Student Leadership Advisory Committee to support the association’s efforts to build student engagement, service, leadership and voice.

Barker also was inducted into the Washington Activities Coordinator Association Hall of Fame in 2015. In addition to his SHS duties, he runs the Association of Washington Student Leaders summer leadership camp.

Before going to SHS, Barker also worked as an assistant principal at Valley View Middle School (2006-2008).

Snohomish businesswoman honored for charitable work

Tina Kuna, co-founder of Dream Dinners and Living the Dream Foundation, was honored as the Kiwanis Club of Snohomish Citizen of the Quarter for her commitment to help feed hungry children in Snohomish County and worldwide.

In September, her Foundation partnered with Friends and Family Community Connection to host a local Fight Against Hunger event, where nearly 1,100 volunteers packaged 150,000 meals to distribute locally and in Tanzania. Kuna, of Snohomish, also serves on the board of the Snohomish Community Kitchen.

Grants help fund arts education in Everett schools

The Everett Public Schools Foundation awarded $9,000 in grants for arts programs in the Everett School District.

Teachers will use the money for conga drums at Cedar Wood Elementary School, a West African dance performance at Jefferson Elementary School, musical playground additions at Mill Creek Elementary, instrument repairs at North Middle School, and more.

The money came from last year’s benefit breakfast, which also contributed to $33,000 in classroom grants the Foundation made earlier this year. This year’s fundraiser is at 7 a.m. March 9 at the Xfinity Center. The suggested minimum donation to attend is $100. Find out more at www.everettsd.org/epsf.
