Nominate a real hero for Red Cross

Do you know of someone you consider a real hero? That person could have helped by performing CPR in a life-threatening situation. Or maybe it was rescuing a person or animal from a burning building, coming to the aid of a distressed boater or swimmer, or taking action at the scene of an accident.

The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for heroes to honor at its 13th annual Real Heroes Breakfast, to be held Dec. 9 at Comcast Arena in Everett.

Heroic deeds must have been completed between October 2007 and Oct. 6, 2008. To be eligible, a nominee has to live or work — or in the case of armed forces personnel, be on military assignment — in Snohomish County.

Nomination forms are available at www.snohomishcounty.redcross.org or by calling Kay Ashenfelter, chapter director of development, at 425-740-2324.

Deadline for nominations is Oct. 6.

Flags return to full-staff today

Gov. Chris Gregoire ordered flags flown at half-staff Monday to honor Eichmann Strickland, 23, a Navy corpsman serving in Panwar province in Afghanistan, who was killed Sept. 9 in action.

Last year, Congress amended the U.S. Flag Code to give governors the authority to lower flags when a state resident in the military is killed in the line of duty.

Visit with Island County sheriff

A South Community Outreach Meeting is planned tonight to discuss the future of the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mark Brown will be at the meeting at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 Highway 525, Freeland.

Brown will discuss the department’s manpower issues, crime statistics and the budget.

Help determine future of rural land

Snohomish County Planning Department officials continue to collect public comments on the future of rural land in the county.

The next public forum on rural lands is at 6:30 tonight at Pioneer Hall, 20722 67th Ave. NE, Arlington.

People who live outside urban areas are encouraged to attend to help decide how rural land will be maintained in the county.
